Happy Mothers Day? Not for everyone
Mothers in Poverty: A Call to the Church
The reality of poverty in the UK is stark, and mothers with young children are among those hit the hardest. Recent statistics reveal that over a quarter of children in the UK—more than 4.2 million—are living in poverty. Single mothers are particularly vulnerable, with nearly half struggling to make ends meet. Rising living costs, unaffordable childcare, and insecure work leave many mothers unable to provide for their children’s basic needs, often having to choose between heating and eating. This is an urgent issue that the Church cannot ignore. (Source: The Joseph Rowntree Foundation, 2024)
A Biblical Call to Care
Scripture makes it clear that God’s heart is for the vulnerable. James 1:27 reminds us, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” Proverbs 31:8-9 commands us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves… Defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Mothers struggling in poverty today fit this biblical category of those in distress, and as followers of Christ, we are called to act. The Church has a responsibility to ensure that no mother or child is left behind, suffering alone.
How Churches Can Take Action
The good news is that churches across the UK are already stepping up. Many have partnered with Jubilee Plus, a Christian charity equipping churches to support those in poverty. Here are some inspiring examples:
-
Partner Churches: Local churches have set up food banks, baby banks, and support groups for struggling mothers. Some have created mentoring schemes, offering emotional and practical support to single mums.
-
Employment & Training: Some churches run job clubs and skills training to help mothers find stable employment.
-
Community Care: Churches provide toddler groups that offer much-needed friendship and a listening ear, building community and helping mothers feel less isolated in their struggles.
Jubilee Plus provides resources, training, and support for churches wanting to make a real impact. By partnering with them, churches can be better equipped to serve vulnerable mothers and children in their communities.
Get Involved Through Jubilee Plus
The scale of the challenge is great, but so is the opportunity for the Church to shine. Every congregation can do something, whether through direct action, financial support, or prayer. If your church wants to make a difference, consider partnering with Jubilee Plus. Together, we can bring hope and practical support to struggling mothers and their children, reflecting God’s love in action.
