Little Lunches, Big Miracles: Trusting God to Multiply What We Have
When Jesus fed the 5,000 (John 6:1–14), He began with what seemed insufficient—a boy’s small lunch of five barley loaves and two fish. Yet, in His hands, this modest offering became a feast for thousands. This miracle reminds us that when we surrender our limited resources to God, He can multiply them beyond our imagination.
In our daily lives, we often feel our contributions are too small to make a difference. Whether it's time, money, or energy, we may hesitate, thinking it's not enough. However, the story of the feeding of the 5,000 teaches us that God doesn't require abundance; He seeks willingness. That boy's simple meal, offered without reservation, became the catalyst for a divine provision.
This lesson is especially pertinent today. According to the Trussell Trust, between April 2023 and March 2024, over 3.1 million emergency food parcels were distributed across the UK—the highest number ever recorded. Alarmingly, more than 1.1 million of these parcels went to children.
The scale of food poverty in the UK is staggering. Behind each statistic is a person, a family, a child facing hunger. The need is immense, but the response doesn't have to be. Just as Jesus used a small lunch to feed thousands, our seemingly minor contributions can have a significant impact.
Churches, charities, and individuals are stepping up, providing meals, donations, and support. These acts, though they may seem small, are multiplied by God's grace to meet the vast needs around us. Your donation, your volunteer hours, your prayers—they all matter.
The boy in John 6 didn't know what Jesus would do with his meal. He simply offered it. The result? Not only was the crowd fed, but there were twelve baskets of leftovers. God's provision is not just sufficient; it's abundant.
At Jubilee+, we envision a world where no one goes hungry. We strive for a society where food banks 's been rare no longer necessary because justice and provision have been restored.
Let's be inspired by the boy's example. Let's offer what we have, no matter how small, and trust God to multiply it.
A Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
You fed the hungry with five loaves and two fish.
You saw the need and responded with compassion and power.
Today, many are hungry again—physically and spiritually.
We ask: give us this day our daily bread.
Use our offerings, our prayers, our hands—multiply them.
Until no one goes without, and all are satisfied by Your grace.
Amen.
