Pause to pray

Inspired by the regular tweets from a Twitter friend, we have decided to trial quick prompts for prayer on Friday lunchtimes, giving ideas for three groups of people to pray for per letter of the alphabet.

There will be minimal direction given, just three subjects. Take it in whatever direction you like, and pray for as long or short as you wish.

You'll notice that each week we include a group of people you might not necessarily think to pray for - this week it's those in authority, next week it will be 'the bullies'.

Why are we praying for them? Because God commands it.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:43-45

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. ... “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. - Romans 12:9, 20-21

As Natalie has been teaching about around the UK, God's call on us to be merciful is not restricted to those we like, to those we care about, to those we think deserve mercy. Just as we were shown God's infinite mercy when we were underserving sinners, so it is godly to show mercy to those who don't deserve it.

We can pray that they will respond to God's mercy and be transformed, of course - we are not praying that they will be more effective bullies or less just authorities. Let us pray for healing for the wounds that have caused them to wound others, and pray that God's powerful love and justice will be at work in and through them.

Let us know if you find these helpful and if it's something you'd like us to continue. And let's be expectant for God to work through the prayers of many - however brief.

Look out for the first one at 12.30pm tomorrow (Friday, 10 January) on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds.
