Where mercy and justice meet

Gaining employment is generally recognised as the best route out of poverty. There are currently 3.3 million ‘workless households’ in Britain, but even being in work is no guarantee of being out of poverty – in fact, 66 per cent of working-age households in poverty have at least one adult in work. Zero-hours contracts, low pay and benefits changes are among the contributing factors. Employment is another area where churches across the country are having an impact, not only supporting those who are out of work and offering help with employability skills, but also with actually providing jobs, particularly through social enterprise (see our ‘Business for Good’ section for more info). From providing suits for interviews to running job clubs to helping those with a criminal record find employment, there are lots of examples of effective work by churches in this area.
