Jubilee+ welcomes pause of UC rollout

Yesterday it was announced that the forthcoming vote in Parliament on whether to transfer 3 million new claimants to Universal Credit has been put on hold.

Instead, MPs will vote on moving 10,000 people onto the controversial benefit system.

We welcome this delay as an indication that Work and Pensions Secretary Amber Rudd is listening carefully to the concerns of churches, charities and other agencies, and to the evidence of many people who have been plunged into poverty as a result of being moved to UC. Any pause is a hopeful sign that some of the serious flaws in the system may be addressed before any more people are harmed by it.

It was a privilege to be able to talk to Ms Rudd before Christmas about some of our concerns with the system. We are grateful that she has taken the time to listen to us and many others, and look forward to working with her in the future to create a system which is fair and just.
