Media Movers North: Improving media coverage of young people with migrant backgrounds.

Background
On Road is an award-winning charity that tackles social problems by improving media coverage of misrepresented groups and issues. In 2019, On Road Media launched a programme called Media Movers North, to improve the way the UK media talks about young people with migrant backgrounds. As well as a Manchester based group, funded by Barrow Cadbury Trust and the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, we also have a group based in London.

Media Movers North supports young people from migrant backgrounds through media training, mentoring and peer support. We want to inspire and encourage media professionals to make new and better content about young people who migrate.

“Media Movers has been really good for me, it’s been a relaxed pace which is really refreshing. It’s been really nice seeing journalists so keen and interested in the subject; asking questions which mean they want to know more.” – Lizzie, a Media Mover

What we are offering: October 2020 - July 2021
We’re looking for 10 more people in and around Manchester to join our group of Media Movers to work behind-the-scenes influencing journalists. There’s no expectation for people to do media interviews, but we can support anyone interested in this.
It is free to take part in Media Movers and all travel expenses are covered. Media Movers isn’t a course, but it’s a great way to get more experience in the media, have opinions heard, make friends and feel more confident. It doesn’t involve anyone making media themselves – it’s about getting the journalist to do their jobs better!

Between October 2020 and July 2021, we will run three different activities:
Monthly peer support sessions from October 2020 to July 2021
One media and self-care training course done over 2 half days - Tuesday 10th November & Wednesday 11th November 2020
Around six – eight meet-ups with the media, between October 2020 to July 2021
There will be at most two activities a month, so this programme could fit alongside someone’s job, studies or hobbies.
