Tips on Opening a Bank Account

Without a bank account, you can't get your benefits paid. Without an address - and often the requirement is utility bills - then you can't open an account. Without a national insurance number...and so it goes on.

New refugees are more often than not turned down for an account - often quite wrongly, because even bank staff don't know the rules properly. The process is bureaucratic and grossly unfair - but there are things that make the process easier. If a British citizen goes along too, that often makes the difference between a yes and a no.
